Notability annotations visible but the PDF is missing
A frustrating Notability failure can leave your handwriting, highlights, or other annotations visible while the imported PDF background is blank or gone. In some cases, the note data is still there and only the PDF resource referenced by the package is missing.
Why the handwriting can remain
The annotation data and the PDF background are not the same resource inside a Notability note package. That means one can still be present even when the other is missing.
Can NoteMend repair this?
Sometimes. NoteMend supports a narrow case where the exported .note package still references exactly one PDF background but that PDF file is absent from the package. You also need the same original PDF that belonged to the note.
What happens during diagnosis
- Select the affected .note file.
- NoteMend inspects the package locally in your browser.
- If exactly one missing PDF reference is found, NoteMend asks for the original PDF.
- A repaired copy is prepared before payment is requested.
Diagnosis is free. A supported prepared repair costs US$4.99 once to unlock and download.
What NoteMend does not do
It does not reconstruct missing handwriting, invent a PDF you no longer have, or guess when multiple resources are missing. If the package does not match the supported repair, NoteMend stops.
