Recover a missing PDF from a Notability .note file

A Notability .note file is a package that can contain note metadata, annotations, and embedded resources such as PDFs. In one repairable failure mode, the package still records which PDF it expects, but the actual PDF file is missing.

What a manual repair involves

At a high level, a manual repair means opening the .note package as an archive, locating the note metadata, identifying the PDF reference, checking the package's PDF resources, restoring the original PDF under the expected internal filename, and rebuilding the archive without disturbing the remaining note data.

This is possible to do manually, but it is easy to use the wrong filename, alter the package structure, or rebuild the archive incorrectly.

What stays untouched

When recovery is not possible with NoteMend

NoteMend does not recreate a PDF from annotations, recover deleted notes from cloud storage, or guess among multiple missing PDF resources. If the package is ambiguous, it refuses the repair.
